Ila writes indulgent romance novels as an alternative income stream from her freelance editorial work, and as a way to express herself authentically. Well - almost.
Idris discovers her impressive catalog of longer romantic tales and shorter erotic stories. She's been holding back writing what she really wants to write for a long time for fear of backlash; will Idris be able to encourage her to follow her heart as a stranger in the crowd, or will his impromptu plan at being an anonymous, fatherly figure to "Penny Naim" backfire?
AS LONG AS POSSIBLE
When she was a little girl, before her life had really begun, Ila asked her father to be with her forever. She can imagine being nowhere else but with him. When she is a woman - after college, her car accident, the revelation of her father's musician alter-ego - Idris attempts to reconcile his inescapable mortality with his desire to be the only man in Ila's life.
Giving the gift of a conventional wedding to his daughter is out of the question - but giving her a ceremony of sorts, no matter how subtle, doesn't have to be.
In the years following the theatrical comeback and curtain-close finale of the Arabic symphonic metal band Elk Garden, the aging, anonymous frontman - The Black Stag - wants to give a gift to his daughter. Their strange relationship has cut them off from the rest of the world, and the girl craves a public intimacy with the man she holds in her heart as her father and her husband.
They seize on an unexpected opportunity as the seasons turn and the leaves begin to change: a Halloween-themed masquerade ball. They play the part of total strangers to heighten the intensity of their game, and risk drowning beneath the heady allure of being just another couple in the crowd...
Ila is woken up earlier than expected by her father groaning beside her. Curiosity gets the better of her though she knows exactly what he's doing - given what the previous night had been. She wants to help out, but her definition of help just ends up prolonging Idris's painful predicament...
Just a silly porn-without-plot piece I wrote up the other day after sketching Ila helping Idris out while he jerks off. ♥
A girl discovers a book and becomes haunted by more than memory in her late grandfather's attic. The moment she touches it, the moment it burns her - it marks her.
She summons a man who is half-real. She summons a monster whose claws hooked into her heart before she took her first breath. She summons a shadow that makes her so desperate, so full of a horrible, aching grief and longing that it unravels her from her very bones. Whatever he is - man, monster, shadow - she understands innately that she belongs to him.
Ila thought she'd been abandoned in childhood - then she discovers through the loss of her last living relative that she was not abandoned at all. Ila thought she'd been untouchable when her first kiss and every encounter thereafter ended in catastrophe - then she discovers through surreal, sexual nightmares that she was always meant to be touched.
Idris - the man, the monster, the shadow - cannot take her where she belongs. Not yet. He can only guide her to find pieces of the puzzle that lead to him in the wake of a sickness that begins the moment he touches her. He is ancient, but not all knowing - he never knew that a fleeting touch would cascade and spell out Ila's doom. A demon is hollow without his flesh, but a demon's daughter will die without her mate.

BLACK STAG - WHITE DOE
An Arabic, symphonic metal band called Elk Garden vanished without a trace over twenty years ago.
Ila comes home from her third year in an out-of-state college after a car accident that nearly ended her life. Idris, ever her doting father, welcomes her home and encourages her to enroll in a local college. Both to continue her studies and so he can keep a watchful eye on her, since she did not walk away from the accident entirely unscathed.
Idris begins to get peculiar phone calls that have him working long evening hours at his accounting firm, despite being just weeks away from a late retirement at seventy-one. At the same time, Elk Garden makes a sudden, explosive comeback with its seven-foot-five, masked, anonymous southpaw violinist and front man, The Black Stag. As Ila grows closer with a musician named Ahmed over the band's encore twenty-five years in the making, tensions with her father rise at home over what kind of designs he has on her.
Idris can see right through his punk bullshit; Ila is too clouded by affection and a desire to live and thrive in the wake of her car accident to do the same. At their apex, a strange turn of events leads Ila to the backstage of an Elk Garden show. Right into the arms and heart of the mysterious, mythical, eerily familiar Black Stag...

THE MEANING OF GARDENIAS AND GLADIOLI
An Arab merchant and his albino daughter live in relative comfort and solitude in the French countryside, 1873. The old merchant is approached by a noble who wishes to ask on behalf of his son for the daughter's hand in marriage. The merchant, Idris, emphatically refuses - his daughter will marry no one, and he would be remiss to marry her off against her wishes. The noble asks again several weeks later, and again is refused, harsher this time - until he insinuates something about Idris's past "dealings".
Idris's blood-soaked past has come to collect its due. He must marry Ila off to the son of the Vicomte to save them both from a grisly demise, despite her pleading, despite her protests that rip his heart in two. The circumstances become deadly - dire - when Ila awakens her assassin father's long-buried hunger for her by kissing him with so much passion during a heated argument about her unwanted betrothal. For her, to keep her, he will spill the blood of kings again.
The two of them stall for time to plan an escape from France as their tremulous, tender romance blossoms right beneath the Vicomte and his son's noses, and Idris's decades of experience as a honed, lethal weapon will mean the difference between life and death.
